CONSTITUTION WEEK
"An American Legacy"
Why should I celebrate Citizenship Day and Constitution Week?
George Washington said, "A primary object.should be the education of our youth in the science of government."
-
The Congress, by joint resolution, designated September 17th as "Citizenship Day" and the week beginning September 17th and ending September 23rd of each year as "Constitution Week".
-
In accordance with this resolution, President George W. Bush has proclaimed September 17th as Citizenship Day, and September 17th through September 23rd as Constitution Week.
He said, "I encourage Federal, State, and local officials, as well as leaders of civic, social, and educational organizations, to conduct ceremonies and programs that celebrate our Constitution and reaffirm our rights and obligations as citizens of our great Nation."
-
Public Law 108-477 contained in the recent Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2005 states that "each educational institution that receives Federal Funds for a fiscal year shall hold an educational program on the United States Constitution on September 17 of such year for the students served by the educational institution." See the whole law.
Now it is the responsibility of the states, cities, communities, schools, etc to proclaim Citizenship Day and Constitution Week, and organize educational programs.
Therefore, the National Center for Constitutional Studies has organized a resource packet and other helpful information to aid in these
educational programs and entertaining celebrations.
