Emanuel Leutze's famous painting of George Washing crossing the Delaware captures one of the critical events during the Revolutionary War. Crossing the Delaware river on that long wintery Christmas night of 1776, and the subsequent surrender of the Hessian army gave the American troops the confidence to re-enlist and keep fighting for freedom.
