When the second Continental Congress met in 1776 to discuss a final separation from Great Britain, they formed a committee of 5 men to write this declaration. Three members of this committee (Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson) are captured in this painting. Ultimately, Jefferson was given the assignment of writing the draft which was then reviewed and approved by Congress.
